Here are top scams which were frequenty reported by Indian newspapers.

AgustaWestland Scam

  • AgustaWestland was a helicopter design and manufacturing company, Headquarters in Rome, Italy. It was founded in year 2000.
  • India signed a contract to purchase AgustaWestland in February 2010 to carry the president, PM and other VVIPs. Deal size was $600M+ for 12 helicoptars.
  • In January 2014, the Indian government cancelled the contract "on grounds of breach of the Pre-contract Integrity Pact and the agreement by AWIL (AgustaWestland International Ltd)". It was allleged that US$60 million had been paid as a bribe.
  • In December 2018, middleman Christian Michel, was extradited to India on December 4th 2018. CBI and indian authroities continued their investigations.

Aircel-Maxis case

  • Aircel is being investigated by CBI for alleged irregularities in the Maxis takeover. According to CBI, Aircel's previous owner C. Sivasankaran was forced to sell his stake to Maxis by the then Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran in 2005 in return for Maxis' investment of Rs. 5 billion in a DTH company owned by the Maran family.
  • In 2018, the Enforcement Directorate searched residence of the Congress leader P. Chidamabaram(then finance minister) and searched multiple premises linked to his son. Agency investigating “the circumstances of the said FIPB approval granted by P. Chidambaram". Later in 2018, ED chared P. Chindambram as no. 1 accused.

Punjab National bank Scam

  • In January 2018, PNB filed a complaint with the CBI, wherein it was alleged that Nirav, Ami Modi, Nishal Modi and Mehul Choksi, all partners of M/s Diamond R US, M/s Solar Exports and M/s Stellar Diamonds, in collusion with two bank officials committed the offence of cheating against PNB and caused a wrongful loss.
  • In Feburary 2018, ED revealed that Nirav modi, one of the main accused is in switzerland.
  • Later in 2018, it was revealed that Nirav modi is in UK.

Rafale deal controversy

  • In 2007, the UPA government had released tenders for 126 MMRCA fighters for Indian Air Force. France's Dassault made the lowest bids and was selected in 2012.
  • In April 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a decision to purchase 36 Rafale fighters during his visit to Paris.
  • In June 2015, the tender for 126 aircrafts was officially withdrawn.
  • In 2016 an MoU was signed between India and France for 36 Rafale jets at a price of €7.87 billion. Dassault Aviation announced a joint venture with Indian businessman Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence for the compensation investment of 50% of the value of the deal.
  • Congress alleged that favouritism by the Modi government toward reliance.

Vijay Mallya

  • 17 Indian banks are trying to collect approximately ₹9,000 crore. They filed petition at the Supreme Court of India in March 2016 to try to prevent Mallya from leaving the country.
  • Mallya left India on 2 March 2016 after saying he wanted to move to Britain to be closer to his children.
  • In May 2017, the Supreme Court of India found Mallya guilty of contempt of court and summoned him to appear on 10 July. He failed to appear.
  • On 3 October 2017, Mallya was arrested as part of a money-laundering case in London and was released on bail.
  • On 16 June 2018 Vijay Mallya was ordered to pay £200,000 (Rs. 1.81 crore) to Indian banks by a United Kingdom court.

Fodder Scam

  • In 1992, Bidhu Bhushan Dvivedi, a police inspector with the state's anti-corruption vigilance unit submitted a report outlining the fodder scam and likely involvement at the chief ministerial level.
  • Based on the ultimate directions issued by the supreme court, on March 1996, the Patna High Court ordered that the case be handed over to the CBI.
  • On 10 May 1997, CBI made a formal request to Governor of Bihar to prosecute Laloo.
  • In March 2012, a special CBI court in Patna framed charges against Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jagannath Mishra along with 32 other accuse.
  • On 30 September 2013, special CBI court announced a sentence of five years and four years for Laloo and Jagannath Mishra, respectively.
  • In Janurary 2018 the court passed judgement for the third case and has awarded a five-year jail term to Lalu Prasad Yadav.
